Bakr Eid is one of the main festivals for the Muslims. Bakr Eid is celebrated to realize how Ibrahim (As) suffered. In this day we cut the goat to remember how Ibrahim (As) was asked to sacrifice his son Ismail (As) and Ibrahim (As) was going to sacrifice him. Then Allah ordered him to sacrifice a kind of a goat instead of Ismail (As). This is one of the greatest things for Muslims. You could ask me it’s too sad because you kill an animal. The answer for this is we Muslims share our meat to the poor, neighbor’s and friends this makes a good relation ship with our family.

A quranic verse: Abraham took his son Ishmael and placed him on the ground and when he was about to sacrifice Ishmael, God called out "O Abraham! Thou hast already fulfilled the vision! This was indeed a manifest trial". God then provided him a ram as an alternate sacrifice in place of his son and a reward for his sincere intentions. Afterwards God blessed Abraham with a second son Isaac (PBUH), a great and righteous prophet. The story can be found in the pages of the Holy Quran Chapter 37, verses 100-113.

In this day we Muslims give charity, greet other Muslims, All the Muslims pray together in this day. We Muslims fast before the day of Eid. On this day it’s forbidden to fast. On Eid most people eat their favorite food and also some wear new dress.

I am going to explain about my Bakr Eid.  On 7/11/2011 I celebrated my Bakr Eid. I woke when it was dawn and bathed and also wore my new dress. In that morning my family and I went to Siraj mahal.
It is located in Egmore. We prayed our Eid prayer and listen to the khutbah.
Then we went to a hotel and ate our break fast. Then we went to my father’s friend’s house. Then we went my mother’s friend’s house. There we sacrificed our goat and I played with my friends and with my father. For dinner I ate briyani.

We also gave a lot of the meat to the poor and we took some of it. I had a lot of fun that day with my friends. At night I ate parota with korma.

Bakr Eid is a festival that Muslims celebrate. This tradition has been followed for centuries. It was started by our Prophet Ibrahim (AS) and it went like this: One day Ibrahim (AS) dreamt that Allah commanded him to sacrifice his son Ismail (AS). The next day he told the dream to his son.  Ismail (AS) said “O father, Allah commanded you to do it, so do it.” Ibrahim (AS) took his son away to sacrifice him. As he reached a place which is now known as Mina – a valley near Makkah – Satan appeared and tried to stop him from doing his Lord’s commands. The prophet Ibrahim (AS) picked up a few small stones and threw them at Satan. Little Ismail (AS) and his mother did the same. The prophet Ibrahim (AS) gently placed his son on the ground and blindfolded himself with a handkerchief so that he could not see his beloved son while carrying out the Lord’s order. As Ibrahim (AS) took a knife to sacrifice Ismail (AS), Allah sent the angel Jibril (Gabriel) down with a ram. “Sacrifice this ram. Do not sacrifice Ismail (AS)” said Jibril to Ibrahim (AS). So this is how it started.

On Eid we got up early in the morning at 5oclock. I did everything and put on my new dress.  We went for Eid prayer in Unity Public school but we were very late and they had started the prayer so we went to another place in Adyar for the prayer.   We got home and we bathed the goat and my father gave it water to drink before sacrificing.  This time, the butcher did not come, so my father had to take the goat to a shop.  My father had a lot of trouble taking it to the shop especially when it was a butting goat. My father had to drag it to the auto and tie its legs!

The meat was shared with our neighbours and poor people. We gave one third to our neighbours, one third to the poor and had one third for ourselves.  My cousins came and we had a lot of fun by playing games like lock and key, hide and seek and karate. We took turns sleeping too!

What I like best in Bakr Eid is the Eid prayer.  I really enjoyed my Eid.

By Abdurrahman Jamal, 7 years

During Bakr Eid, we watched goats getting sacrificed. One goat was so stubborn it kept going out of where it should have been and tried to butt Shabeer Uncle.  We had an Imam who led the Eid prayer. He recited a Surah. The surah’s name was Surah A’ala. I was learning it.  Then later he recited another Surah that is the 87th surah of the Quran.  Its name was Ghashiyah.  When I finish A’ala I am going to learn Ghashiyah.  But only when A’ala is fully solid.

We had about 7 goats to be sacrificed.  The goats were big – about 3 feet length and 3 feet in height.  They were all sacrificed in the courtyard.  Also a friend of my big brother, Junaid, took a goat head’s and scared his sister with it.  Then later another person, a 16 year old, said to her “You’re scaring me more than they are”. And you know why?  Because she was screaming!  After we saw the goat skinned and cut, someone told us that the skin was still moving.  It looked like the heart was still beating.  Then we checked the insides – it turned out that we couldn’t see the heart. Maybe it was because the heart wasn’t beating any more.  It was gross to see that but it was a fact that we looked in.  We bought some meat back with us. We gave some away to poor people. The other we cooked. One of them was mutton kanji.  The other was mutton rice.  When I tasted the mutton kanji, it was lovely.  I fell sick because of swallowing toothpaste.  So I had to eat only a little. The next day was still Bakr Eid. And yet the next day was still Bakr Eid. In Arabia it is called Eid ul Adha.

Bakr Eid was nice.

By Aisha Jamal, 10 years

Eid ul Adha is a special day for all Muslims. We wake up early in the morning, have a bath, put on our best clothes and go to the mosque to do our Eid prayers. After that we sacrifice a goat, sheep, oxen, buffalo or camel. After we sacrifice our animal we take the meat home. Our Prophet (SAW) used to give one third of the meat to the poor, one third to the relatives and keep the rest for himself.

You might be wondering why we sacrifice an animal on Eid ul Adha. It is because Prophet Ibrahim (AS) when he moved to Makkah was ordered by Allah to sacrifice his son Ismail (AS) so he went to do it. On the way he met Satan (devil). Satan tried to stop Ibrahim (AS) so he threw stones at Satan. Then Satan went to Ismail (AS) and told him where his father was taking him and tried to stop him from going but Ismail (AS) threw stones at him. So Satan went to Hajira (AS) and told her that her what husband was going to do but she also threw stones at him. When Ibrahim (AS) was about to sacrifice his son, the angel Jibril (AS) came with a ram and said “Sacrifice this instead”. So that is why we sacrifice an animal on Eid ul Adha

I have always found Eid very nice. This year I had a really good time. I woke up early in the morning and put on a pink pavadai (skirt & blouse). We went to a restaurant called Woodlands for breakfast. I had idly with sugar. After breakfast we went to the Jameel Ahmed Islamic Centre in Santhome because our goat was going to be sacrificed there. When we came into the yard, I saw 7 huge goats. One of them looked like it was about to charge, but didn’t. All the goats were brown and white and one was black. I did my Eid prayers at the Centre. The prayer has two cycles where we stand behind the Imam. The Imam recites verses from the holy Quran and we all pray behind him. Then the feasting began. I had parota with chicken curry. It was delicious but spicy. While I was eating, my mom told me to hurry because they were starting the sacrifice. I quickly finished my food and went outside. By the time I reached, they were starting to sacrifice the second goat. I sat down and watched them sacrifice the other goats. I watched them skinning and cutting the meat. After they gave us the meat from our goat, we went home.  At home, my older brother and I went to give some of the meat to our friends in the neighbouring house. I saw a very cute cat and kitten which I stroked.

My mother made a lot of special dishes with the meat like lamb with dill sauce, roast lamb, fried liver and kidney, mutton kababs, soup, Kashmiri ribs.  I had a lot of fun!

My Umrah by Maryam Anas, 11 years

This was a time I was going to do Umrah when I was big. Our trip to Makkah started on a Thursday afternoon in a car from Riyadh. We reached Taif within 2-3 hours. We got up in the morning, showered and put our ihram clothes. Then we continued our travel to Makkah. We reached there in one hour. Then for the first time I saw the Kabah. I was surprised to see a lot of people. When I saw the kabah it felt as if I was standing in Heaven. It looked huge and beautiful, a glorious sight to see. I was standing staring at the Kabah, when my mother called “Maryam, come quickly. We are going to do Tawaf*”. I went and did Tawaf. I felt like I was walking in Heaven. After finishing Tawaf, I felt thirsty. I went and drank ZamZam* water. It was so tasty that I drank four cups of it. It tasted like honey. After doing Tawaf , we did Sa’ee. My legs were hurting but I still did it for Allah.

We stayed in Makkah for five days and all the five days we did Tawaf in the early morning. It was such a pleasure and happiness to see the Kabah and to do the Umrah.

*Tawaf – going seven times around the Kabah

*ZamZam – a blessed and sweet tasting water.

Id ul Adha is called the Id of Sacrifice. We are celebrating Id ul Adha to remember Ibrahim’s (AS) sacrifice. We celebrate it in Dhul Hijja 10th day.

One day Ibrahim (AS) had a dream that Allah told to sacrifice Ismail (AS) in one hill. Three times Shaitan came and told “don’t go; don’t go” Ibrahim (AS) will cut you.”  They picked some small stones and threw them on Shaitan. Then they reached the valley around mountains.  When Ibrahim (AS) was going to cut with axe, that time Allah told Jibril (AS) to tell Ibrahim (AS)”Don’t cut Ismail (AS), cut this ram. “

Every Muslim should cut the ram or camel or goat or sheep. We should tell when we are cutting “Bismillah, Allahu Akbar”. Divide meat into 3 bowls, one for us to eat biryani, one for poor, one for neighbours.

Even people will go to Haj. People going to haj will wear white towel. They will celebrate Id in Mecca Saudi Arabia.

I want to tell you about my festival Eid ul adha aka Bakr-Eid. We celebrate this festival to remember what our prophet Ibrahim (AS) aka Abraham did. He was ordered by Allah to sacrifice his son Ismail (AS) aka Ishmael. When Ibrahim (AS) was going to sacrifice his son, Allah ordered the angels to save Ismail (AS) and place a ram in his place. To remember the hardship our prophet had, we sacrifice a goat also. We can also sacrifice a camel, buffalo, sheep or a ram. We distribute the meat to the poor and to our relatives. We also keep some for ourselves.

I woke up in the morning and went to the bathroom to brush my teeth. I took a hot bath after that and I wore my new clothes. I prayed my Eid prayers and then greeted my family. I then went out to see the goats being sacrificed. I felt sad for the goats because I know that I’m not going to eat it. I rarely eat mutton or chicken. I like to eat fish or beef because they taste really good.  After I saw the sacrifice I went and helped my mother to pack the mutton up. That took a long time. I also ate my lunch in between. We had biryani.  Biryani is a special rice cooked with spices. It is very famous rice in India. Most of us like it.

After that I went and sat in the sofa in the hall with my cousins. We chittered and chattered there. After all this, I went to my room and started reading a book. I read and read and read and then I went to sleep. The next day I went to my grandma’s house for dinner. We spent a happy time there.

I had loads of fun.

By Siddiqa Sultana, 9 years

This Eid was when I was 9 years old. I went to my grandparent’s house to celebrate Eid. I got up at 5:30 in the morning, and went to bathroom to have a bath. I dressed myself in new clothes. I wore a green and peach coloured frock. The men of the family – my grandfather, my father, my uncle and my cousin brother went to the mosque for prayer. We women – my mother, aunt, cousins, other relatives, sister and I prayed at home.

We had 3 goats this year. One was very young, one was very old and one was a fighter cock. The goats were kept next to the gate of our house. The fighter started a fight with the old goat. They started butting each other. I called my father and my uncle and they stopped the fight.

The butcher came at 8o clock. We started the sacrifice. My uncle first sacrificed his goat, and then my father and then my grandfather. The butcher started cutting the meat into pieces. We distributed meat to our relatives. We also distributed for some poor.  All the three days we had biryani, biryani, biryani.

The day after Eid we went Vellore to visit my maternal grandmother. We went by bus. I reached at night. I ate my dinner and slept. The next day I saw another goat’s sacrifice.  I went to a shop and bought Uno. My cousin, my sister and I started playing.  We played Uno all day.

There was a very big house warming in the evening. Everyone had come. We helped serving the food.  I ate biryani again and I ate chicken 65 and bread halwa.

My Eid was fun because I went to my grandparents house, met all my relatives and played with so many cousins.

Ibrahim (AS) and the story of Haj - Mudassir Hussain, 9 years

Once upon a time there was a prophet named Ibrahim (AS). He was 100 years old. His wife Hajira (AS) was 98 years old. Ibrahim (AS) had no children. Ibrahim (AS) prayed to Allah to give him one child – naek and swalihin. And Allah gave one child. His name was Ismail (AS). Allah said to Ibrahim (AS) “I will give you one exam about your child Ismail (AS)”. Allah said “Take your child Ismail (AS) and your wife to one big desert. There will be nothing there. Leave them there and come back to your house. Tell them you should stay here, I will go to my house.” His wife Hajira (AS) said to Ibrahim (AS) “Why are you leaving me here?” Ibrahim replied “Allah said to do this. May Allah bless you”. Hajira (AS) was thinking that there is no water and dates and my child Ismail (AS) is crying. Ibrahim (AS)’s wife Hajira was searching for water. She saw two hills of Safa and Marwa. She went up the two hills called Safa and Marwa. Seven times. Then his wife saw that her child Ismail (AS) was sleeping on the ground and suddenly water came out from the ground and it made a river called ZamZam. The desert became a village because of this river. The village was Mecca.

Allah said to Ibrahim (AS) “Now go to your child and wife”. And Allah said to him “You like your child and sacrifice your child”. After 11 years Ibrahim (AS) went to see his child and wife with a sword. He took his child to one place. Shaitan went to Ibrahim (AS) and asked “Why are you killing your child?” Ibrahim (AS) took some stones and threw them on Shaitan. Then Shaitan went to Ismail (AS) and said “Your father is going to kill you”. Ismail (AS) said to his father “You want to kill me? I will lie down. There you tie a cloth on my eyes and cut me”. Ibrahim (AS) tied a cloth on his eyes. He cut with a sword. It didn’t cut. He sharpened his sword.  Three times it didn’t cut. At the fourth time, Allah pushed Ismail (AS) and kept a goat and Ibrahim (AS) sacrificed the goat. He passed the test. They made the Kabah in that village to pray. They called Muslims to pray.

When we were in Saudi, we planned for this year to go on Hajj, but Allah didn’t wish this to happen, so we celebrated this Arafah day and Eid in Chennai.

After coming from the school one day, my little brother Umar told us that there was a goat. We saw the goat and it looked like this, “It was a brown goat with medium sized horns and every time we

looked at it, it looked at us. When our father tried to feed it, it always tried to hit him”.

On Eid-ul Adha We woke up early in the morning and got ready and then went to an open ground prayer area arranged in Unity Public School, but we arrived 10 minutes late, so we went to Adayar Masjid and performed our Eid prayer. After the prayer we returned home and our father took the goat to a place to sacrifice it. After eating lunch we took rest until Asr Prayer. In the evening, our cousins visited our home and they were two girls and we have fun with them even if they were younger than us. When they left it was time for bed. It was such a fun Eid.

By Sumayyah, 10 years

In the morning of Eid, we woke-up at 4o’clock and my sisters and I wore new clothes and got ready while my mother and grandma cooked the breakfast - Egg-pie and Ceylon Rice bread and my father helped my brothers get ready. The previous night our cousin sister had applied henna for all of us.

We prayed Fajr and ate sweets and got ready to go for Eid Prayer in Eid Musalla arranged by Unity Public School, but we got there late, so we went to the big mosque in Adayar and performed our Eid prayer. We met our friends and relatives and wished them Eid Mubark. We came back home and ate our breakfast and wished our neighbours. Our father bathed the goat and we were waiting for the butcher to come, but it was taking such a long time, so my father decided to take the goat to the butcher shop and sacrificed the goat there. We packed and distributed the 1/3rd of the meat for poor people and 1/3rd for our friends, neighbours & relatives and other 1/3rd for ourselves. We ate our lunch and took some rest and planned to go out to beach, but our relatives visited our home, so we didn’t.

Haj - Mujahid ul Islam, 12 years

About hajj:

In Islam Hajj is compulsory if a man has sufficient wealth. Hajj is a pilgrimage where most of the Muslims join in a place and remember Allah. They come from different countries. In hajj all the people are equal and there isn’t any fighting. In hajj all the men wear the same kind of a cloth called ihram to show they are the same and there is no comparison of rich and poor.

How to do hajj:

All the Muslims from different countries come by ship and by airplane. Airplanes land in a place called Jeddah where all the Muslims get down. Then they go to the mosque in Makkah. First they have to do the Umrah.  For this they go around a black cube building called Kabah 7 times.  This is called the Tawaf. Then they run between two mountains called Safa and Marwa seven times. This is called the Sa’ee.
In the 8th of Dhul Hijjah as per the Islamic calendar, the pilgrim Muslims go from Makkah to Mina, a small town nearby.  There they stay in tents and spend time in worship.

On the 9th of Dhul Hijjah the pilgrims go to a city named Arafat. In Arafat Muslims stay close near a mountain named Mountain of Mercy. At this place our Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) gave his last khutbah (lecture) so this place is blessed with mercy. In Arafat pilgrims make dua or supplications.

The holy Prophet (Pbuh) said: “Ask Allah for all the things except evil things and believe that Allah will give then Allah will surely give.”

Hadith: The Prophet (p.b.u.h.) said, “There is no day on which Allah frees more of His slaves from Fire than the Day of Arafat, and He verily draws near, then boasts of them before the angles, saying: ‘What do they seek?’” (Sahih Muslim)
And in another Hadith: “Verily Allah boasts of the people of Arafat before the people of Heaven (angels) saying: ‘Look to my servants who have come to Me disheveled and dusty.’”

At sunset people go to a place called Muzdalifah where they spend the night.  They combine the sunset and night prayers called Magrib and Isha respectively. Then they start picking stones for the next event. They take about 100 stones. The next morning the pilgrims go back to Mina to do the stoning event at Jamarat. They throw stones in rememberance of Ibrahim AS stoning the devil.  After that the men shave or cut their hair. They also cut their nails. Then they go to Kabah and go around it 7 times. Then they pray two cycles of prayer called rakahs and again run between Safa & Marwa. Now the main part of hajj is over. The pilgrims return to Mina and stay there for the 11th and 12th of Dhul Hijjah where they repeat the stoning ceremony.

Upon leaving Mecca, the pilgrims must make a Tawaf e Wida or farewell Tawaf around the Kabah.

My Interesting Umrah, by Sumaiyya Anas, 10 years

I left from Riyadh on 21st of May on Thursday afternoon with my friends. We travelled 900 kilometres. When we reached Taif we stayed there for one night. We woke up at 6 in the early morning, took a bath and put on our Ihram clothes and started our trip again. It took one hour to reach there. My friend and my family went inside the Haram. When we saw the Kabbah, we were very happy. We did tawaf. It was a very hot day. After doing tawaf in the Mataaf, we went to pray Asr.  There were so many Turkish and Iranian people. My father went and did Sa’ee and we did it next. We saw the mountains of Safa and Marwa and they were covered with a fence. There were many ZamZam tanks around Safa and Marwa. There people drink and do wudu. After doing Sa’ee we were very tired.  The men and the boys cut their hair and the ladies trimmed their hair.

We stayed there for five days and did Tawaf on all the days.  We used to stay there for almost the whole day. I love to do Umrah!

My Umrah, By Nusaibah Anas, 8 years

Assalamu alaykum

I have gone for Umrah 3 times in my life till now. We became so happy when we first got to know we’re going. And we became curious. On the way from Riyadh to Makkah there are so many mountains.

First we travelled to Taif. After we settled down in a hotel, we quickly showered and put on our Ihram. It is a special dress for Umrah. For boys the ihram is a long white cloth and it must not be stitched. And girls must wear an abaya and scarf. Then we travelled to Makkah. When we reached there the first thing we did was wudu. Then we prayed two rakah nafil. Then we went around the Kabbah seven times. When we finished one round and came to the Kabbah door, we raised our right hand and said “Bismillah Allahu Akbar” once. This is called tawaf. Next came the Sa’ee between Safa and Marwa. We walked from Safa to Marwa. One round is completed if you stand on a mountain and the Kabah is on your right. The Sa’ee is also seven rounds. And after Safa and Marwa, the girls  cut a little of our hair. The boys had a bald head. Then the Umrah was complete! When we were thirsty we just went to a cream coloured can and drink the ZamZam inside.

The Kabbah is such a glorious sight to see. It is also fun to do Umrah.
