Which fertilizer works best - urea, organic or vermiculture?

By A.T. Fuaad 11 years

Today a large number of crops are grown using chemical fertilizers. These are bad for the plant, the soil, the microorganisms, humans and the animals. I want to see if using natural fertilizer or vermicultured soil will give as good or better growth to the plants. I grew moong daal plants and measured their growth. I found that in the initial stages plants growing in the pot with vermiculture were the healthiest. Read more…

How does sea water affect plant growth?

By Maryam Anas, 12 years

There are several plants which cannot tolerate the effect of salt water. However, different plants have different levels of tolerance for salt. If salt water is regularly supplied to most of the terrestrial plants, they will certainly die.  Some plants need some amount of salts to carry out their chemical processes. Excess amount of salts can have negative impact on the growth, hydration and appearance of plants. Plants get dehydrated because of sea water and also suffer malnutrition. I grew moong dhal in 4 different pots and watered them with different concentrations of sea water. I found that... Read more..

Does biodegradable plastic really degrade?

By Nusaibah Anas, 8 years

Plastic bags don't decompose because the molecules stick together very tightly and it is hard to decompose. It is made of little grains. We did an experiment where we took half a piece of bread and a piece of a plastic bottle. We sprinkled water on both and kept it for 9 days. Then we saw that nothing happened to the plastic but there was a green spot on the bread. This told us that plastic doesn’t decompose. Then there would be plastic everywhere. And it will spoil the earth.

Plastic bags harm animals and kill animals. Sometimes the animal is so hungry it eats plastic bags. The plastic bags choke them. Or the plastic bags can block and clog the intestines.  Hundreds of thousands animals like dolphins, whales, turtles, crows, pigeons, other birds, dogs, cows, camels, elephants, goats and lambs are dying every year. If we own a cow, we must be careful not to leave any plastic bag near it. Plastic harms the plants by its chemicals. And it will harm us too if we eat the plant.
Plastic blocks the soil and doesn’t let the plants grow. It doesn’t let the mud breathe. When we throw plastic it is burned and the smoke comes out and it is poisonous. And it adds to the pollution. And we start to cough. And dirt goes inside our lungs and we will get some problem.

Biodegradable plastic bags are made of plants or petroleum. I wanted to see if these would degrade faster than paper or cloth? I found that ….  Read more..

Which brand of detergent is worst for plant growth - Rin, Ariel or Surf?

By Aisha Jamal, 10 years
More and more people are using washing machines nowadays. The waste water from the washing enters the soil and the soapy water affects plant growth adding unnecessary chemicals to it. So I want to find out which soap affects plants the least - Ariel, Surf and Rin so then I can understand which detergent to avoid.

I found that my hypothesis that was wrong. Surf Excel Matic was not the most harmful detergent for plants, in fact there was no significant difference between any of the plants in growth and branches. There was greater variation between the plants in the same pot as compared across pots.  Maybe the slightly lower growth and branching of Ariel watered plants may be due to the bleach in it. Read more at how detergents affect plant growth.

Which oil - Palm, Rice Bran or Coconut will prevent larvae from beoming mosquitoes?

By Sumaiyya Anas, 11 years
Mosquitoes present a real health hazard by spreading diseases like malaria, chickungunya, elephantitus etc. It is better to prevent mosquitoes from breeding rather than using chemicals later to kill them. Putting oil on open water pools prevents mosquitoes from laying eggs. Simple natural organic edible oils can be used to prevent their breeding and yet not harm the environment because when the eggs hatch, they have to come to the surface to breathe. With oil on the surface, the larvae cannot breathe and die. I wanted to see which oil would be best in preventing mosquitoes from breeding amongst coconut oil, rice bran oil, and palm oil in preventing mosquitoes from breeding. But I found an an anomoly!
