Our correspondent, Aneesa Jamal was invited by Al Hikmah weekend Islamic school to speak to the mothers about "Encouraging Thought in Education". Ms Jamal emphasized that the existing system of education emphasizes only rote memory and success in exams. This method discourages children from applying thought in their learning. She said that learning must be "thinking driven" not knowledge driven where children acquire the knowledge and skills required for any learning they are doing.  She suggested techniques that have been adopted at Al Qamar to encourage children to use their minds - brainstorming, public speaking, research projects, extensive reading etc.
