“Your Guardian Lord is Allah, Who created the heavens and the earth in six Days and is firmly established on the Throne. He draws the night as a veil over the day, each seeking the other in rapid succession: He created the sun, the moon and the stars, governed by laws under His Command. Is it not His to create and to govern. Blessed by Allah, the Cherisher and Sustainer of the Worlds” (Al Quran: 7:54)

Thus started the 1st Great Lesson in Elementary Montessori. The 1st Great Lesson, as the name says, is the fundamental bedrock of all work in Montessori.  The research, investigation, queries and work that the students will do in the coming days springs from the intellectual ideas presented in this Lesson. The Lesson addresses how the universe came be being, how the earth was created, how all things are divided into different states of matter, how everything obeys has properties and obeys God’s  Law.  The children also saw experiments which illustrated different properties of solids, liquids and gasses. The climax of the show was the volcano – with real sparks and colour.

After the lesson, the children had were bursting with questions.  Why was the volcano’s ash green? Why did the honey not give its colour to the water? What if? How? If? They couldn’t wait to start their own experiments to satisfy their curiosity. In the past few days, the children have been conducting experiments themselves. Infact, young Hafsa brought in a model to demonstrate rainwater harvesting!!

MashaAllah, Elementary Montessori rocks!
