Approach to Arabic language

Arabic is taught as a second language at Al Qamar Academy.  The focus is on children learning to speak and comprehend Arabic instead of simply rote memorizing vocabulary and writing out canned answers.

Flash cards, Arabic cartoons, conversation time, vocabulary quiz games and spelling contests make the Arabic class fun and interesting.  Older children use the Iqra curriculum to learn the language formally.

Islamic Studies

Islamic Studies is a compulsory subject. Additionally Islamic teachings are integrated into the secular curriculum through the use of stories, duas, Islamic children's books, and videos. Our aim is to inculcate in our children the love for Allah and His Rasool (SAW), and a profound sense of appreciation of Allah's handiwork.

Approach to Hifz of the Holy Quran

All chidlren at Al Qamar Academy are strongly encouraged to memorize some surahs of the Holy Quran.  However, certain students who show the inclination and ability are considered for Hifz of the Holy Quran. The Hifz process is made easier for the child in the following ways:
  • School Hours: the normal school hours at Al Qamar are shorter than most schools, thereby allowing children to use the extra time for Hifz. Hifz students are expected to put in an additional hour before and after school for their hifz.
  • Focus on Tilawah: The children are first taught to fluently read the Holy Quran with Tajweed, making their Hifz process easier.
  • Focus on Arabic language: Arabic vocabulary is introduced early on, thus when the child finally starts memorizing, s/he has a large vocabulary to assist with memorization
  • Individualized time with the Ustaad: Groups of 2-3 children learn from an Ustaad allowing the ustaad to really focus on each child.
  • Customized Secular curriculum: The curriculum is specially customized for the child to ensure that the child is meeting CBSE requirements without getting overloaded.
  • Use of audio visual/ computer aids: Technology is used to facilitate learning. Children are provided Quran DVD's for home use. At school, they get to use computer software to memorize and revise the Quran.
